How to choose a North Carolina Wedding Photographer

How to choose a North Carolina Wedding Photographer…

Photography is so much more than just having a nice camera or taking a lot of pictures to cover your bases. The first thing we hear from all of our assistants trying to become professionals is, “Wedding photography is much more difficult than I thought it would be.”  The goal of this article is to help prevent you from hiring the wrong photographer, or even worse, “Uncle Joe”. And to help you learn how to choose a North Carolina Wedding Photographer.

A picture is worth a thousand words. The photographer you and your future husband select will be your photo journalist, so it is important to know what feeling you want represented in your photographs.

Every photographer has their own style and it is up to you as the client to find what you are looking for. The photographer and clients need to mesh. You need to find your style in your photographer. When you start the search to choose a North Carolina Wedding photographer the first thing you need to look at is their gallery.

Most of the time when I meet with potential clients, they say the same thing. They don’t want their parents’ wedding photos. They want a natural documentation of their wedding from someone who is not going to interrupt the natural flow of the day. There is nothing worse than being poked and prodded and posed all day, if what you really wanted was someone to hang back and blend in with the scenery. A good majority of photographers are going to capture your wedding as it happens. Make it very clear with the photographer what type of style you are looking for whether it be editorial, natural, journalistic, or posed. As a photographer we really rely on our clients to keep us informed.

Regardless of how talented a photographer is, it is important to have a good relationship with them; it is always a good idea to meet beforehand and chat and see if the “mutual chemistry” is right. Remember, this person will be a vital part of the most important day of your life, so be sure you choose someone you feel good about. If you don’t click with them, move on! Many times as a destination wedding photographer I am limited to skype dates and phone calls. Choose a North Carolina Wedding Photographer that feels these interactions are very important. You will appreciate it later on during those tough moments.

Once you narrow it down to a few photographers, set up a meeting to talk about the services offered. One might include time, materials, proofs in an album, custom prints in a custom album, and enlargements. Another might simply include his time and materials, with everything else as an add-on. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Be very thorough when signing your contract. Make sure you know the ins and outs of what you are agreeing to. Always ask how long it will take to get images back and if any sneak peeks are provided. Some photographers will post sneak peeks that very night and some photographers will make you wait 4 to 6 weeks. Another thing to ask is if they outsource their editing. This may not seem like a big deal to you as a client, but it is definitely something you want to know. There is nothing “wrong” with outsourcing, but it means a lot when a photographer does their own editing. You want to make sure what you see in their galleries is streamlined with what you will be receiving. When you choose a North Carolina Wedding Photographer you will find that their gallery speaks to you regarding their work. Also remember this gallery was handpicked to show their very best work.

You want a photographer who is willing to work with you and help you through the day. You want them to be understanding and compassionate. This is a huge day for you and it cannot be recaptured. You want to choose someone who will understand what you want without needing too much direction. A good photographer can capture the story of your day and some artistic portraits while not dragging you away from your guests or interrupting special moments in the evening. They are able to photograph those special details of the evening; your smile as your Dad takes your hand and your first kiss. It is these moments that we cherish! These things are important when you choose a North Carolina Wedding Photographer.

Pricing is always the first thing that is spoken for. Budget, cheap, affordable…etc… My clients always tell me the same thing “I want a budget friendly, affordable, not overly priced, amazing, reliable, excellent photographer”. That is a lot with a small price tag. Now I am not saying you cannot find budget friendly photographers and no I do not think you should up your budget for someone either. You have a budget for a reason and you should stick to it. What you do want to do though is find the BEST photographer in your budget. The best photographer is not always the most expensive photographer. The best photographer is one that meets your budget, your style, and is available for your date. You will have a million emails out and a million emails in. I think choosing a wedding photographer is probably the most difficult part of a wedding. This is the one chance you are given to document this huge day. Don’t gamble this day with an “affordable photographer”, gamble the day with a budget friendly, reliable photographer.
